How tall can a Lego tower get?

So well... this article from the BBC is not about people stacking Lego bricks to build the highest possible tower. But since everybody likes Minecraft we are interested in how much of them it needs to destroy the bottom brick!
And what will happen to it? Will it crack? Will it explode? Will it crumble?
