Vortrag Dr. Lowe, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

11.11.2014 15:00 - 16:00

Veranstaltungsort: BAR 213

Am 11.12.2014 um 15:00 Uhr wird Herr Dr. Lowe, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University einen Vortrag zum Thema "Applied Flow Diagnostics at Virginia Tech: Enabling Advanced Propulsion and Power Research" im Raum BAR 213 halten.

Abstract:
Innovative instruments are needed to address several pressing needs in the propulsion and power industries. Useful techniques must share a few common traits, including portability for use in several facilities, high data density to minimize run times, robustness to minimize setup and calibration times, resolution of the demanding spatio-temporal scales that occur in the flows of interest, and little or no instrument-specific rig modifications. In the talk, examples of recent Virginia Tech developments will be presented for applied flow diagnostics development that meet these requirements. For instance, a Doppler-based three-component velocimetry system capable of 100 kHz bandwidth measurements at 32 simultaneous points has been applied for understanding the noise-producing turbulent events in supersonic aircraft plumes at lab and a large scale NASA test facility. Such an instrument is only possible with the latest photonics technologies of high power single-line mode tunable lasers, ultra-sensitive photodetector arrays, and high bandwidth/high throughput data acquisition. Results from the applications of interest will be presented along with an overview and outlook for propulsion and power research on-going at Virginia Tech

Vortrag Prof. Riza, University College Cork, Ireland

12.11.2014 10:15 - 11:00

Veranstaltungsort: BAR 172

Am 12.12.2014 um 11:15 wird Herr Prof. Riza, University College Cork, Ireland einen Vortrag zum Thema "Hybrid Optical Sensor for Extreme Temperature Measurement in Next Generation Higher Efficiency Greener Power Plants" im BAR 172 halten.

Abstract:
This invited lecture will describe research conducted to demonstrate, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the world’s first wired-wireless hybrid optical sensor for extreme temperature sensing, in particular, for the harsh environments of greener coal-fired gas turbines and combustors in power plants, gas turbines in aircraft engines, and other ultra-hot applications. The demonstrated sensor is based on a merging of Silicon Carbide materials with optical technologies enabling in excess of 1600 degree-Centigrade operations.
